The Continental Period can be divided into two main periods: the Early Republic (1783-1820) and the Antebellum Period (1820-1850). The Early Republic was a time of economic and political instability, as the new nation struggled to find its way in the world. The Antebellum Period was a time of economic and social growth, as the United States expanded its territory and its economy.

The Early Republic (1783-1820)

The Early Republic was a time of great economic and political instability. The new nation was struggling to find its way in the world, and there was a great deal of debate about the best way to govern the country. The Articles of Confederation, which had been adopted in 1781, proved to be too weak to hold the country together, and in 1787, the Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia to revise the Articles.

The Constitutional Convention produced a new Constitution that created a stronger federal government. The Constitution was ratified by the states in 1788, and the new government was inaugurated in 1789. The first president of the United States was George Washington.

The early years of the new government were difficult. The country was divided by political factions, and there was a great deal of economic instability. However, the country gradually began to stabilize, and by the end of the 18th century, the United States was a growing and prosperous nation.

The Antebellum Period (1820-1850)

The Antebellum Period was a time of economic and social growth for the United States. The country's economy expanded rapidly, and the population grew from 9 million in 1820 to 23 million in 1850. The United States also expanded its territory during this period, acquiring new lands from Spain, France, and Mexico.

The Antebellum Period was also a time of social and political change. The country's population became increasingly diverse, as immigrants from all over the world came to the United States in search of a better life. The United States also experienced a great deal of social unrest, as tensions between the North and the South over the issue of slavery grew.

The Antebellum Period ended with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. The Civil War was a bloody and costly conflict that pitted the North against the South over the issue of slavery. The war ended in 1865 with the defeat of the South, and the United States was reunited as a single nation.
