Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born on November 8, 1938, in Mymensingh, Bengal (now in Bangladesh). The daughter of renowned physician Dr. Jibanlal Dey, she inherited a passion for the arts and literature from a young age. She received her early education in Mymensingh and Dhaka, and went on to study Comparative Literature at the University of Calcutta, where she earned a Master's degree in 1960.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen began her literary career as a poet, publishing her first collection, "Pakhir Ankha," in 1959. Her poems were characterized by their lyrical beauty, introspective nature, and exploration of personal and social themes. Over the years, she published numerous poetry collections, including "Prishthar Parikrama" (1969),"Nishi Aparanha" (1984),and "Adhokoshito" (1997).

In addition to poetry, Sen also excelled in fiction writing. Her first novel, "Agunpakhi," was published in 1964 and depicted the experiences of a young woman during the Partition of India. She went on to write over 70 novels, covering a wide range of subjects, including historical fiction, contemporary social issues, and psychological exploration. Some of her notable works include "Chenamukh" (1967),"Nirbachito Galpo" (1981),and "Ami Ananya" (2001).

Sen's literary prowess extended beyond poetry and fiction. She was also an accomplished translator, bringing works from Bengali into English and vice versa. Notably, she translated Michael Madhusudan Dutt's epic poem "Meghnad Bodh Kavya" into English as "The Slaying of Meghnad," which earned her international acclaim.
