In the fog-shrouded city of London, there is a place where the ordinary and the extraordinary collide. It is a place where the past and present intertwine, where secrets lurk in the shadows, and where the truth is always just out of reach.
This is the world of Nicci French's haunting and atmospheric mystery novel, The Wooden Baby. Set in the labyrinthine streets of London's East End, the novel follows the story of DI Frannie Rooke, a brilliant but troubled detective, as she investigates the mysterious death of a young woman.
The victim, Isobel Richmond, was a beautiful and enigmatic artist who was found dead in her studio, a wooden baby doll clutched tightly in her hand. The doll, with its dark, mysterious eyes, seems to hold the key to Isobel's death, but its secrets are not easily revealed.
As Frannie delves deeper into the investigation, she uncovers a web of deceit and corruption that reaches the highest levels of society. She encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, each with their own secrets and motives.
There is Isobel's estranged husband, a wealthy and powerful businessman with a dark past. There is her enigmatic lover, a struggling artist who seems to know more than he lets on. And there is the enigmatic wooden baby doll, a symbol of both innocence and corruption.
As Frannie closes in on the truth, she finds herself drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. She is hunted by a ruthless killer who will stop at nothing to protect their secrets. And she must race against time to uncover the truth before more lives are lost.
The Wooden Baby is a gripping and suspenseful mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. Nicci French has created a haunting and atmospheric world that is both familiar and strange. And she has peopled it with unforgettable characters who will stay with readers long after they finish the book.
